The field relations of the Attapulgus clay, the structure and texture of the clay, and settling experiments lead to the conclusion that the fullers earth beds were accumulated under shallow water. The suspended clay mineral probably settled slowly and built up a mass of more or less flatlying flakes oriented parallel to the lamination.
